Out of the Box: PRISM Heads to Harrogate!

Following its successful appearance at Alexandra Palace in London last month, PRISM's exhibition Out of the Box is travelling north to the Knit + Stitch Show in Harrogate this November.

What happens when artists are asked to think inside the box? This exhibition brings together textile artists responding to a shared creative challenge: to make work that fits within a box while allowing their ideas to reach far beyond it. Through stitch, weave, print, dyeing and mixed media, the artists explore themes of memory, personal experience, place, landscape and the stories held within objects and materials. The results demonstrate just how much imagination, experimentation and individuality can be contained within a seemingly simple format.

If you missed the exhibition in London, here's another opportunity to discover the work and see how PRISM members have interpreted the challenge.

Mycelium: Sue Gascoyne at Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre

New member Sue Gascoyne’s Mycelium explores the threads that connect us to one another, the things we consume, the waste we produce and the planet we must cherish. Created from fruit and vegetable net bags collected by Sue’s local community, the soft sculptures are connected by veins of macramé that reach out to the historic building’s structure.

The work offers a thoughtful reflection on community, connection and our relationship with the environment.

Gutted and MEAT: Sue Gascoyne at the Museum of the Environment - with artist’s talk

Sue Gascoyne also presents two thought-provoking installations, Gutted and MEAT, at the Museum of the Environment in Ipswich.

Gutted transforms waste packaging, recycled textiles, ceramics and biomaterials into a dystopian fish shop. With an abstract and playful approach, the work explores the impacts of our extractive culture and climate change, inviting us to look differently at waste, consumption and our relationship with the environment.

In MEAT, Sue uses recycled textiles, ceramics and butcher’s shop paraphernalia to examine our relationship with food. Playfully presented, the work invites reflection on extraction, commodification and our disconnection from our bodies and the food we eat.
