Rob Howell

Blackburn, Lancashire, UK

Rob is a contemporary textile artist whose practice explores male connection, heritage, and the democratic voice of cloth. Graduating in embroidered textiles in 1988, Rob has spent several decades in cultural management and commissioning. Returning to studio practice, he constructs large-scale wall quilts and banners that invite us to consider the relationship between men and needlework and celebrate male connections.

In his landmark series, Cwlwm Dynion ('The bond of men'), Rob adapts the intarsia piecing technique—inspired by 18th- and 19th-century military quilts—for the modern sewing machine. Piecing bold, graphic portraits from 100% recycled wool garments. His work serves as a metaphor for resilience, mending and positive male well-being.

As this series evolves, Rob is exploring the parallel themes of historical male needlework practice and male friendship.
