Mew

St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, UK

Mew is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves between textiles, ceramics, painting and sculpture. Working with bold colour, humour and familiar objects, she is interested in making things slightly strange and shifting everyday materials and images into new contexts.

Her work often explores repetition, production and the tension between the handmade and the mass-produced. Textiles have become an increasingly important part of her practice, through processes including quilting, stitching, knotting and construction, often combined with ceramics and unconventional materials.

Dogs, domestic objects, architecture and other recognisable forms recur throughout her work, becoming playful but sometimes slightly unsettling characters. She is drawn to the emotional and cultural associations carried by familiar things, while enjoying the ambiguity that comes from changing their scale, material or context.

Based in St Leonards on Sea, Mew studied Fine Art at the University of Brighton and graduated with First Class Honours in 2010
