Hannah Rae
Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK
Hannah’s practice spans textiles, sculpture and installation. Working primarily through hand stitch, she creates sculptural forms that explore uncertainty, bodily change, adaptation and the search for balance.
Her work is rooted in lived experience, using abstraction to consider shifting identities and our changing relationships with our bodies. Slow, accumulative stitching is central to her process, allowing forms and ideas to emerge through making rather than from predetermined outcomes.
Recent work considers how balance might be found without symmetry, and how we adapt when things are altered, uncertain or not quite as expected. Themes of repetition and difference are threaded through her practice, with individual forms brought together in evolving installations that explore the relationships between them.
Curious about how stitched forms can occupy space through structure, movement and installation, Hannah continues to explore the possibilities of hand stitch beyond the surface and into three-dimensional form.
